Pixelated

Pixel picEvery now and again you run across an original personality whose sheer presence demands attention. That person in this case is the game music composer known as, Pixel. She has a uniques style of her own that she calls “Trip-Hop.” I encourage everyone to check out her site, Pixel Game Music, and add her as a friend on MySpace. So let’s meet the woman behind the music.

EDG: What’s your history?

Pixel: Intellivision. I was in diapers back then, so I’m pretty sure I just chewed on the coil cord while my brother played Astrosmash.

EDG: How did you get into making game music?

Pixel: Well, it’s the most natural avenue for me. I’ve been an avid gamer and trained musician for as long as I can recall. I’ve just been fortunate to meet some great people in the gaming and music industries who have been very receptive to the project.

Basically, I score for video games, animation, and the like. But I also create vocal “pop song” versions of my compositions. This way, people can choose how they’d like to enjoy the music, especially for those who don’t play video games (do they even exist?!).

EDG: What games, if any, feature or will feature your music?

Pixel: I’m new to the field, but I do have a couple of projects in the works right now. Of course, mum’s the word on the details, but I’ll give you a hint – there’s a 68% chance it’s set in outer space!

EDG: What does it take to be a game music composer?

Pixel: I don’t know if there’s any formula, but I’m sure it involves discipline in honing one’s skills, an insatiable passion for the craft, and a mastery of the Mega Man 2 soundtrack…especially Metalman.

EDG: Who are your musical influences?

Pixel: Wow, I’ll risk sounding cliché and say “it’s just too many to list!” Those that immediately come to mind include Bjork, Portishead, Tori Amos, Sneaker Pimps, NIN, Aphex Twin, Wu Tang Clan, 2 Unlimited (!), Art of Noise, Prince, Cibo Matto, Luther Vandross… *sigh* List subject to change in 5 minutes.

EDG: What games are you playing and/or are looking forward to playing?

Pixel: I’m playing Zelda: Phantom Hourglass on my DS right now. Very cute game! Also, when my body doesn’t require feeding or bathing, I’m glued to WoW. However, this November, only one game will have what it takes to pry me away from my PC….and it shall be called MASS EFFECT!! I get knots in my stomach just reading about that game.

EDG: What do you do other than play games?

Pixel: I’m dancing whenever and wherever I can get away with it. Also, I enjoy watching Korean dramas….and I like to eat. Holy crap, do I love to eat.

EDG: Do I play online and how can people get a chance to play with you?

Pixel: Yes, I do. Just enter the Outland and look for the most badass human shadow priest in town. Ha!

EDG: Any shout outs or last words?

Pixel: Thanks for the powwow - I appreciate the support! I’ll be adding new music and blogs to my site regularly, so please check back every now and then! Hi mom, you spoony bard!

I'm a long time gamer since 80's when people seemingly didn't know the term "color coordination." Seriously though I enjoy FPS/3PS, driving games, action games, sports, RTS, and adventure as well. I will play pretty much anything that caters to my lifestyle meaning something that I can pick up and get into within a short period of time. As you can guess though, RPG's don't make it in my "gaming diet" very often. Gamertags: HiredArm/M3RQ

  1. I hopped over to the site and Pixel is very talented! Definitely check out her tracks with the vocals if you haven’t already. I also noticed her site was designed by Seanbaby, pretty sweet stuff.

  2. Not bad. I checked some of her stuff and they were pretty good!
