PlayStation Home Unveiled
Thanks to Timm for sending us a link to the Engadget article detailing the upcoming PlayStation Home service. They note that the PS Home could be a “Second Life” killer which I strongly disagree with. Second Life gives players the ability to create whatever they want without limitations - this includes penis hats or having their avatars screwing animals (I’m not making this up). I highly doubt Sony will allow players to create content like that, especially with the “dynamic advertising” that will be strewn throughout Home.
With that aside Home does look like it can have some MMO-type potential with users able to visit each other’s “Homes”, hold conversations via typing and voice chat, and decorate their homes with objects and their achievement “trophies”.
I hope for PS3 owner’s sake that with all the time Sony has put into this service, it will end up working well and being worthwhile. For the PS3 to not have a true dashboard online service this far into its life is saddening and will put them further behind Microsoft and their Xbox Live service. Some PS3 owners I spoke with said they’d just be happy for a simple dashboard service that will allow them to have a friend’s list, and have voice chat. Let’s hope Sony’s gamble with the ambitious Home pays off.

this is like asking for a car so you could go to the 7-11 down the street and getting a hovercraft. while it is insanely cool, its not easy to park and it doesn’t work as well on land as it does on water… but overall it will get the job done…..
if they ever release it.
I thinkPS Home is a great idea in theory. It’s like they took XBL Dashboard and combined it with Nintendo Mii/ Channels. I agree though it will fail on a lot of levels without Sony stepping up to the plate with unified services. Simplicity is the key to what makes XBL the great online gaming service overall - PC or console. Sure it doesn’t have the customization, options, and features of the PC but it just works without having to mess with a whole lot. There’s also the thing that you don’t have to remember IP addresses to servers or friend codes (in Nintendo’s case.)
